New Study Uncovers High Levels of Nanoplastics in Bottled Water
A recent study has revealed that bottled water contains alarmingly high levels of nanoplastics—tiny plastic particles that are even smaller than microplastics. Nanoplastics form when microplastics break down further, and they are pervasive in the environment.
Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study is the first to count and identify nanoplastic particles in bottled water using a technique called stimulated Raman scattering microscopy. Researchers analyzed three popular brands of bottled water sold in the United States, detecting plastic particles as small as 100 nanometers. The study found an average of 240,000 plastic fragments per liter, with a range of 110,000 to 370,000 particles per liter. These numbers are 10 to 100 times greater than previous estimates, which were based on larger particle sizes. Notably, 90% of these particles were nanoplastics, with the remainder being microplastics.
The findings underscore the need for further research into the health effects of nanoplastics. Researchers are now extending their investigations beyond bottled water to include tap water, wastewater from laundry, and snow in remote regions like Antarctica. Understanding the prevalence and impact of nanoplastics is crucial, as they pose potential risks to both human health and the environment.
